Getting Started with Tennis: A Beginner's Tennis Guide

Updated: May 15

“New to Tennis? Here’s How to Start Without Feeling Lost”

Whether you’re 8 or 48, getting started with tennis can feel overwhelming. The scoring is weird, the swings feel unnatural, and everyone around you seems to already know what they’re doing. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to be an athlete to learn tennis—you just need the right start.

Here’s how to ease into tennis no matter your age:

  • Take beginner-friendly tennis lessons. A good coach breaks things down simply starting with proper grip, footwork, and timing. You’ll avoid forming bad habits and build confidence from day one.

  • Use age-appropriate equipment. If you’re an adult, start with a lightweight racket and focus on consistency over power. For kids, we often use red, orange, or green balls, which are softer and lower-bouncing to help them learn proper technique and timing without frustration.

  • Focus on fundamentals. Instead of worrying about winning points, work on making clean contact, keeping the rally going, and learning the basic strokes (forehand, backhand, serve, and volley).

  • Practice patience. Progress might be slow at first, but stick with it—tennis rewards those who keep showing up.
